Sadie

Originally a nickname for Sarah, Sadie spent the early twentieth century on tenement stoops and vaudeville stages, and then dropped out of fashion entirely. The Beatles brought it back in 1968 with Sexy Sadie, a sly portrait of the Maharishi set to a sliding piano riff. Something shifted again in the 2000s: parents heard farmhouse tables and hand-dipped candles in it, and the name climbed briskly up the charts. It now ranks 57, given to about one in 433 girls. One syllable of pure front porch; the kind of name that suits a toddler in muddy rubber boots and the grown woman she will become.
