Luca is what Italian mothers have been calling their sons for centuries — the Italian form of Luke, rooted in the ancient region of Lucania on the arch of the Italian boot, though folk etymology happily ties it to the Latin lux, meaning light. Saint Luca, the gospel writer, is the same Luke who painted (according to medieval tradition) the first icon of the Virgin Mary, and the name carries that faint pictorial, slightly devotional shine.
