Kōichi

Kōichi stretches its first syllable into a long, deliberate oh, then lands neatly on ichi, the Japanese word for one. The name often marks a firstborn son, with kō contributing associations of filial piety, light, or prosperity depending on kanji choice. It was widely given to Japanese boys through the mid-twentieth century and has softened into a more classical register today. The macron on the o matters: without it the pronunciation flattens and loses the name's musical weight. In cursive Romanization it becomes Kouichi or Koichi, each a slightly different negotiation with English. Formal, balanced, quietly confident.
