Josiah

A boy-king crowned at eight, Josiah tore down the idols of Judah and, the story goes, found a lost scroll of the Law hidden in the temple walls. The Hebrew Yoshiyahu means the Lord supports, and that steady consonantal clip has long appealed to American Puritans, from the colonial Josiah Bartlett who signed the Declaration to Josiah Wedgwood, whose pottery still sits in British cabinets. The name quietly climbed through the 2000s as parents looked past Joshua toward something older and a little less worn. It currently ranks 53, given to about one in 314 boys.
