Gianna is the Italian feminine of Giovanni — John, in its most resonant key — and it carries all the gilded edges of a Florentine altarpiece. The root, the Hebrew Yochanan, means God is gracious, but in Italian hands the name becomes something else: warm, rhythmic, a little operatic.
