Eden

The garden at the beginning of Genesis, planted eastward with every tree pleasant to the sight, with a river that breaks into four heads and the Tigris and Euphrates running through it. The Hebrew root means delight or pleasure. Eden has been a Puritan given name since the seventeenth century and a British surname carried by a prime minister (Anthony Eden guided Britain through Suez). It reentered American nurseries unisex in the 1990s and hasn't looked back, currently ranking 72 and given to about one in 518 American babies. Two soft syllables that manage to sound both biblical and midcentury modern; the kind of name you can whisper.
