Dejan

Dejan is distinctly Balkan, threaded through Serbian and Macedonian naming traditions since the Middle Ages. Its most cited origin is the Slavic dej, meaning action or deed, giving the name a sense of quiet momentum, someone who does rather than declares. Serbian medieval history offers a Despot Dejan, brother-in-law to Emperor Dusan, which lends the name a faint royal perfume. Phonetically it is easy and warm, two syllables that ride a soft y glide in the middle. In Serbia and the wider former Yugoslavia it has been a steady favorite through the late twentieth century.
