Ahinoam

Two women in the Hebrew scriptures share this name, and both stand close to power: Ahinoam wife of Saul, Israel's first king, and Ahinoam of Jezreel, whom David married and who bore his firstborn son Amnon. The name means my brother is pleasant, or pleasantness of the brother — a familial warmth embedded in the etymology, quiet against the scale of the stories it attaches to.

In modern Israel the name was revived in the twentieth century and carried with particular grace by the singer Achinoam Nini, known internationally as Noa, whose voice and public presence gave the name a contemporary, artistically inflected life. Three syllables move through soft consonants and open vowels — ah-khee-NO-ahm — giving the whole name an almost sung quality, a slow unfurling that rewards rather than tests the speaker. Rare outside Hebrew-speaking communities, it feels ancient and intimate at the same time, a biblical name that has not been buffed smooth by overuse.
