Aegidius

Aegidius is the Latinized form of the Greek Aigidios, from aigidion, a young goat, or aigis, the shield of goatskin Athena carried. The seventh-century hermit who bore the name retreated to the forests of southern France, where legend says he lived on the milk of a wild hind; he became Saint Giles, patron of cripples and lepers, and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers invoked across medieval Europe. The Latin form has mostly fallen away, preserved in old registers and learned families. Four syllables, ai-GID-ee-us. The name reads scholarly and faintly monastic, a boy's name that belongs on the spine of a Latin grammar.
